Quarry at Corbignano (1949-1950), Derek Hill (1916-2000)

Born in Southampton, Derek Hill first worked as a theatre designer in Leningrad before enjoying increasing success as a portrait painter in the 1960's.

He was an enthusiastic art collector and traveller with a great love of Italy where he became the director of fine arts at the British School at Rome. The subject in this painting is from the small town of  Corbignano in the hills outside Florence.
