Abstract
-
This is a photograph of the South African team that toured Great Britain and Ireland in 1969-1970. They played Swansea at St Helen's on 15th November 1969, winning the match 12 - 0. But the day is remembered more for the violence that broke out on the terraces and spilled over onto the pitch, when anti apartheid protestors stopped the match. The tour was characterised by such protests in several matches and the Springboks did not tour again to the UK until 1994, after the release of Nelson Mandela and change in government in South Africa. The personnel in this photograph are: Back Row (L to R): P J Visagie, G H Muller, M W Jennings, P F J Greyling, I J De Clerk, M C J Van Rensburg, A E De Wet, A J Bates, J B Neethling, P I Van Deventer, D J J De Vos. 2nd Row (L to R): J P Van Der Merwe, R N Grobler, H O De Villiers, O A Roux, R Potgieter, D C Walton, C H Cockrell, A E Van Der Watt, E Oliver, M J Lawless. Front Row (L to R): F C H Du Preez, J H Ellis, S H Nomis, T P Bedford (Vice-captain), C A J Bornman (Hon. Manager), D J De Villiers (captain), A S Malan (Hon. Asst.
