Student Placements

The History of Computing Collection is able to provide practical work placement opportunities for students of Swansea University as well as other institutions across the UK.

If you are interested in a work placement or internships with HoCC please contact us.

As part of the History and Heritage MA degree course at Swansea University, students spend 100 hours undertaking graduate-level work with a heritage organisation or project. As part of his placement with the History of Computing Collection, Rory assisted the Curator with the accession, cataloguing, condition checking and safe marking of the physical items in store. His interest with the collection grew throughout his placement and Rory went on to apply for a PhD in Computer Science at Swansea University, receiving a full scholarship.

"I really enjoyed my summer placement at the History of Computing Collection; I worked with a great group of people to develop my knowledge and experience of both heritage practice and computing history. It was a fantastic opportunity - I'm really glad I got the chance to do it! I was doing important work that benefited both me and the collection, I would really recommend it to other students, it was an excellent experience all round"

Studying for a Master Degree in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester includes an 8 week work placement module where students can put into practice all they have learnt with hands on experience working with a museum collection.  The History of Computing Collection at Swansea University welcomed its first Museum Studies work placement student in 2019 with a museum documentation placement focused on cataloguing the collection. We were very lucky to have Xudong work with HoCC and wish him every success in the future!
